Why "ninja"?

I've never understood why why call players who steal loot "ninjas". Ninjas are silent assassins who will patiently wait for the right opportunity to present itself, not backstabbing, treasure hungry cowards who run as soon as they get what they want. Not to bring up an old argument, but I feel like the definition fits better to a term like "pirate".
I know they're also sometimes called "greeders", but can't we think of a better term for these players?

I thought the term came from EQ actually... where tanks (i.e. the people closest to the mob) would loot mobs before they even hit the floor... i.e. so fast and almost unnoticed that people called it ninjaing.

You have crit me with (possible) logic + historical knowledge.
