Large increase in hacker activity?

Two of my guildmates, including my wife, have been hacked in the past week. After reading recent threads here I've noticed that there seems to be a large amount of posts related to hacked accounts.

While I'm not sure of my other guildmate, I was assured by my wife that she had not downloaded anything fishy, clicked links in any weird emails, or given out any personal information.

So how the hell are these guys getting usernames/passwords?

Does a large increase like this come in cycles, meaning that the hackers gather information and then swoop in and hack a bunch of accounts in the same night?

Q u o t e:
I kinda have to agree with Naxos on this one. Here's my reason y my husband & I run about 3 different virus, malware, spyware programs on our comuter these get ran everynight....not a quick sacan either everynight @ midnight durring the wk and 2 am on wkends our computers get full scans done. We don't surf unknow sites or download unknown programs or junk to our computers. We no longer use Facrbook, myspace or any of those sites. In fact my husbands computer is used for WoW only for the most part other then a goggling something that has to do with WoW it never get used. My computer goes to our bank's website WoW offical site and Blizzard sites, my main e-mail and google & on the rare time I let my kids use it for Nicktoons other then that those r the only sites we go to. So to say it's because we downloaded something or visited a "unknown" site or porn or all that mumbo jumbo it just wrong! To say it's completely our fualt he got his account hack is just wrong. It's a 2 way street u know. Yes maybe I should have bought althenticators sooner but maybe just maybe the company we pay every month for services to play this online game should protect use a little better too. Im just saying. U can't always blame the user. We have our computers protected, we DO NOT surf all over the web like morons, we DO NOT give our information out to ANYONE EVER, we don't fall for fake scams, we followed all the information in the stickies posted on here, but yet we get hoosed over and told it was ourfault.....?

Needless to say it's been 5 day, we're still waiting for his toons to be put back on his account.
Though I do have to say the rep he spoke to was kind and helpful...the wait time on hold was endless ....Im talking a hour on hold the first time and the second time it was a 2 hour wait time on hold.

Anyways all I'm trying to say hear is don't just jump the gun and say that when someone gets hacked it's because they r not protecting themself or their pc and r surfing porn and unkown sites and crap like that. Not everyone does that and not everyone is that totally stupid.

And yet - they got your information, Sabrina. Fault is a word with not so nice connotations. It is a player's responsibility - yes. We cannot protect your system for you.

The reason we try to get everyone to protect themselves with an authenticator is NOT so they can have bad security habits - it's because even with the most reasonable of precautions, something can slip through the cracks. It just adds another layer of security.

It is troubling that it doesn't sound like you found the source of this - and that is vital to this not repeating itself.

When was the last time you updated Flash? One of the nastier tricks is utilizing infected flash ads and you are vulnerable if you haven't updated....or before Flash IS updated. You don't have to go to a 'bad' site to run across those - nor do you have to interact with an infected ad in any way past loading a page that has one.

Another very nasty trick they've been pulling lately is paying Google for prime sponsored links to fake sites that look like ours - or popular addon sites.
