One of my accounts got hacked. Curious.

An account that was closed last October. No one has been on it since then, or typed in its information (I am the only one with its information). It was reactivated earlier today, and I got a standard string of retarded Chinese babble and messed up emotes when I whispered them. It didn't have an authenticator, but the e-mail to which the account is attached is not used for anything besides WoW. Of course, they attached an authenticator.

It's more humorous than outright alarming because there's basically zero gold and nothing of value on the entire account. But I'd like to avoid the account being banned for being mixed up in whatever business they decide to do with it since there is nothing to plunder on it, in case I ever decide to play it in the future (it is my only respectably leveled rogue and warrior, and I am not leveling anything from scratch in this game ever again unless a new class gets introduced). The b-net account is different from this one, because I didn't (and still don't) know the policies about having multiple accts under one b-net. Many times I thought this was a really bad thing, but apparently I lucked out a little bit with this.

I know there are protocols to follow in game and out to resolve this (opening a ticket, phoning Blizzard). I have done the former, and I don't have my phone with me right now, but will do the latter as soon as I can. I guess I am posting here mostly because I am sort of at a loss as to how someone could have gotten into the account in the first place. I have never received any e-mails from anything but Blizzard/b-net (and no, none of these were phishing e-mails; I look pretty closely for those and don't click links willy-nilly). So I don't even know how someone could know the e-mail exists, in order to try brute-forcing their way into the attached WoW account.

I am far from a tech expert or anything, but I get to read lectures by people who are when they respond to other reports of hacking enough that I keep up with practicing measures to keep myself from getting compromised. Pretty much everything on my computer is up to date, I have Kaspersky, MBAM and Ad-Aware, and perform daily (well, nightly) scans with them, which have turned up nothing. I run Firefox with NoScript. I play on a computer that visits like uh...7 sites total, all of which are 'allegedly' safe (I know that no site is completely safe, but you know what I mean). I have e-mails specifically used for WoW and nothing else, with generally complicated passwords.

I'm not trying to point any fingers or w/e, before anyone gets defensive. If the problem is on my end, I'd like to identify it, since I think I basically am as safe as possible without being some kind of super computer wiz. Obviously an authenticator would have (probably) prevented this, but until such a time as they become mandatory, I'd like to not treat it as the only possibly solution, and the only way you could ever have any sort of peace of mind ever.

It is far better to follow up on this now.

You phrased your post a bit strangely - are you the account holder of said account?

Can you give me a character name/realm on it?
