Mind if I need?

I have given some tought to a habit of mine. When looting drops, If i see something I could use, I tend to ask the group if they would mind if I need. The reply has invariably been "go for it" or a variation thereof. Just now, I have been wondering what would I exactly do if someone actually denied my petition, and asked for me not to roll so he could have whatever drop. Would I still roll need and reveal myself as a douchebag? Do I ask before rolling because I care about the needs of the pug, or because I want to think fo myself as a sensitive, caring player?

I havent been tested on the subject and forced to make a moral compass decision yet, but I found it to be a fascinating tought.

Does anyone else relate? or perhaps have any related group looting stories to discuss?

I usually ask if the rules aren't clear at the start of a run. I don't want to be perceived as a ninja or deny someone else an upgrade of their own. For all I know, they could need it more than I do. To avoid having to ask though, just talk about it at the start of the run so that everyone is clear on what is OK and what isn't when it comes to loot. I've found most people aren't too worried about specific loot unless you're doing the top content and if they are, they're pretty up front about what they are going for.

Yes, they are clear if you're in the Dungeon System. I'm just speaking of an "in general" sort of sense. I'm also not going to roll against someone who may need something much more than I do. It's just not that big of a deal to me.
