In-Game Mail Server Glitch

It appears that hackers have managed to hack the WoW mail system itself!

I send gems my mage collects to my warlock jewelcrafter. I haven't been on the server for a while, so my mail got returned to my mage. One of returned mail messages had been MODIFIED. They hacked the message itself and inserted an advertisement for leveling services. There was no letter item that is normally included with written mail. And, unfortunately, that caused it to self erase when I closed the mail message the second time. I didn't think to screenshot because I wasn't expecting the message to disappear, seeing as it didn't happen the first time.

It's not an account hack (although I changed my password just to be sure). It's mail I'd already sent being hacked. Not gold or items seem to be missing from my characters.

Blizzard has a security hole somewhere.

This is actually a known issue for your realm, Shadow - has been for awhile.

It's pretty rare, most players will never see it - but that's an old spam mail that the body got inserted into a newer mail.

Nothing to be concerned about.

Q u o t e:
No, it was RETURNING MAIL I HAD SENT TO ONE OF MY OTHER CHARACTERS. It wasn't spam. It was my own old mail coming back to me. AND IT HAD BEEN ALTERED.

If I thought it was an account hack, I'd report it as an account hack.

I understand, Shadow. This can happen with about any mail - the body of the old spam gets crossed into a newer mail.

A couple months ago there was a mail glitch. This pops up from time to time still, but it is very rare.

Most players will never experience it.
