Trial accounts cant even talk with /say?

I just started this trial account to talk to a few friends and ask a few people what the state of WoW is like on my realm to see if its worth coming back...
As far as I can tell, from everything I've read, they have placed a lot of restrictions on trial accounts but none of them include not being able to talk to people in /say...
So either I'm incredibly unlucky and have people in Ironforge and Orgrimmar just plain ignoring me or something is up? Can it really be that as a trail account member you get ZERO communication?

I must admit... I even stood in the middle of 5+ horde and tried provoking a response... nothing.
What gives?

One CAN talk in /say on a trial - it's a very limited area that can hear that.

There are many reasons this could happen.

Player may have general chat turned off.

Player may not be at keyboard.

Player may make it a habit to just not answer any toon under a certain level.

Doesn't mean you weren't heard, just that they decided not to respond....or possibly there was no one actually at keyboard to see your text.
