Will I be able to regain my old account (paid months in advanced) and play the other characters I have or will I need to upgrade to the Lich King in order to play my old characters?..

Q u o t e:
What content do I have access to during the 10-day free trial?

The trial account will have access to all of the expansion content, including creation of the new death knight Hero class and access to the new continent of Northrend. Please note that in order to create a death knight, you must already have a level 55 or higher character on the realm on which you wish to create the death knight. Northrend is recommended for characters who have reached level 68 or higher. While you can complete expansion quests and even pick up some powerful new items, any characters you play during the trial can only advance up to one experience point below level 71.

What happens to my characters and items after the 10 free days expire?

Any new death knight characters you've created (you must already have a level 55 or higher character on the realm to create a death knight) will be saved and will be inaccessible until you upgrade to the full version of Wrath of the Lich King. Once you've upgraded, they will be unlocked just as you left them and ready for further adventures. All items and gold you gain during the trial period are yours to keep. Any characters that find themselves still in Northrend or any other expansion zone at the trial expiration will be transported to their bind point in Azeroth. If the character's bind point was set in Northrend, he or she will be transported to one of the default graveyards or home cities.

Not only will you be able to play your characters while the WotLK trial is active, but you'll definitely be able to play them after it expires—and keep any spoils you might earn along the way.

If you happen to create a death knight, it won't be deleted, but it will be locked until your account is fully upgraded to WotLK. :)
