Being banned for glitching?

It hasn't happened to me. But people always say they HAVE been before.
So... is it actually possible to be (temp/perma) banned for going into a glitch such as under Stormwind or getting into Old Ironforge. And if it is possible, why would blizzard leave this kind of content in the game if they dont want us to get into it?

As a general rule, Kirain, we wish to discourage "exploration" of zones that are unfinished or otherwise unintended for players to visit; this is as much due to the fact that these areas often contain dangerous inconsistencies in terrain and other pitfalls — a lack of applicable graveyard, for example — that can result in awkward situations for pioneering adventurers. Having players be forced to submit an in-game petition because they fell through solid-looking rock, plummeted to their doom, and now cannot recover their corpse is an outcome we'd like to avoid if possible.

That said, the idea that these are, in and of themselves, "bannable offenses" is a misconception; although the precise circumstances involved are taken into consideration to ensure that deliberate exploitation of game mechanics is met with appropriately severe consequences, under normal circumstances an account would already need to have prior black marks in order for even a temporary suspension to befall it. Capisce? ;)
