Which is a false rumour that many spread around to encourage people not to report, Drewcellia.

I posted in a similar thread last night so I'll quote my response here.

One of the biggest obstacles when it comes to these types of issues is apathy. We have many who simply don't care or understand that this is a Teen rated game and such language and subject matter is not appropriate. You also have the people who think that such language is appropriate trying to bully the ones who do not. They ridicule those who speak up or say they are going to report, they bring up the Mature Language filter or tell you to leave the channel if you don't like it.

A realm's chat environment is a direct reflection on what the realm, as a whole, is willing to tolerate.

If you believe the chat violates the Terms of Use that everyone agreed to abide by, report it. Don't shout out that the person is reported, that only serves to antagonize people and gets you in a flame war. Just click the Help Request option and open a petition.

Include the following information:

* Name of the person (and the realm if this took place in a Cross Realm Battleground or instance)
* The approximate time this took place, including the time zone if you could (i.e. PST, GMT, EST).
* The channel this took place in (i.e. Trade, General, Yell).
* If you can include the offending remark that will help in our investigation but it is not entirely needed.

If they return and continue to violate our Terms of Use, report them again. Be secure in the knowledge that if they are violating our policies they are working their way up the penalty volcano and if they do not learn their lesson they will find themselves with a bit of non-World of Warcraft time on their hands.

Be consistent, and be vigilant. If you are and others on your realm respond the same way it will get better. The worst thing you could possibly do is to shout "reported" and not report it. That gives the impression that the person was reported and nothing was done.

We do recommend that you place those who may be bothering you on ignore, Drewcellia, but that doesn't mean to ignore a violation. We still encourage you to report it and know that we will take appropriate actions.

Please review the Penalty Volcano, that should help you understand how this system works.

it takes so long for a gm to respond

Which is not really relevant, Drewcellia, as long as you leave your petition open we will properly investigate your report and take appropriate actions. It doesn't matter if it has been 15 minutes or a few days, as long as we can verify a violation took place we will handle it.
Q u o t e:

i had people laugh at it a guy said he has banned before

Some may think nothing of getting actioned, Drewcellia, but those people will eventually lose access to their account when it is closed for repeated violations of our Terms of Use.

If it is at the point where the people on your realm believe that they can use inappropriate language with impunity, Drewcellia, then it may be a bit of a journey before that belief can be changed.

I'd encourage you to report some of the worst offenders, as those are dealt with, and those on your realm realize that such behavior will not be tolerated, it should start to calm down.

As I said before one of the worst things you can do is threaten to report and not, that gives the impression to the person who believes they were reported that whatever they did was not found to be a violation.

This is your neighborhood, if you don't speak up who will? If you report and others join you, it will get better, I can promise you that.

No, it is best to report individuals, that way it can be appropriately addressed. You can use the /chatlog to catch much of that "realm going down" spam and report is either via a petition when the realm comes back up or by writing to [email protected].

Blizz probably can't help you so much. The most you can do is report them, but you'll probably get recommended to turn on your LANGUAGE FILTER.

The Mature Language Filter is certainly an option if you wish to have an extra layer of protection for you or a minor child that plays the game. It is important to point out though that our policies apply to both clear and masked language so although the filter is helpful it does not excuse the use of such language.

This is still a Teen Rated game and as such certain types of language and subject matter will also be actioned accordingly with or without a filter present.

You're right except most people aren't hacked nowadays, their Battle.net accounts get picked off forums the user has long since forgot about. Recently me and five other friends were nailed with a week period, interestedly enough we all came from the same guild years ago and think our emails might have been public on those forums.

That's not really a users fault so much as it's a poor design choice by Blizzard. (Poor design choice because it's their resources and manpower that gets wasted as a result in recovering accounts).

Just an email address does a compromiser little good, Rick. How did they also get your password?

So you'll announce your email a dress on these forums then? Will anyone?

I challenge anyone to post their email address in this thread. I mean who cares right you've got a password. So what's the big deal there's no problem at all. We've all got 12-16 character passwords so no big come on people post your emails in this thread.

Not a single person will though. You know why? It's less secure. It's much less secure. Someone with your email address goes from a 0% chance of ever breaking your account, to still a very low chance. But for all I know they could have been working to crack my password for months.

The assumption that a strong password makes your account invincible is an opinion no one holds though since no one would post their email in this thread.

Ummm, no.

Far too many people quite willingly (if unknowingly) run to provide this information. Brute force is just inefficient - unless of course it's someone you know - and that's an entirely different sort of thing and makes you an entirely different sort of target.
