Correct. You must first upgrade to a full account.

You can buy the game in a store, or buy the upgrade on line at the Blizzard store.
Then you enter the key code in your account management page to upgrade your trial to a full account.
When you do that, you will get 30 free days and will be able to enter subscription payments (credit card, game card, or whatever).

The sixty day game card is to continue a subscription on an account that has already been upgraded, Grimoth; you are going to be unable to upgrade an account with one. As stated above, you can upgrade your account by purchasing the game from your local retail store, or by using the online upgrade: (http://us.blizzard.com/store/details.xml?id=110000034)

*Note: There are a few minor restrictions (such as certain in-game chat privileges) in place when the digital version of World of Warcraft is purchased. These restrictions are to protect against fraud and will be removed once payment verification is fully complete. This may take up to 72 hours.

Something to consider, if you plan on upgrading to Burning Crusade as well, is that we offer a World of Warcraft Battle Chest which includes both the original World of Warcraft as well as the first expansion, at a slightly reduced price. Similar to upgrading your account, you should be able to get this from your local retail store, or via the Blizzard Store: (http://us.blizzard.com/store/details.xml?id=110000044).
