Trial Account Upgrade Issue

So this isn't my first time playing this game, but it's my first time dealing with a trial account. What happened might be sheer naivety/ignorance on my behalf, but a little help would be nice to help me rectify this.

I quit about nine months ago and came back entertaining the idea of doing a trial account, since I wasn't sure I wanted to pay 15 bucks only to find out that I really wasn't that interested. Well, I did a trial account, got this character to 20, and realized that I wouldn't mind playing another month or so. I tried to upgrade my trial account through WoW's website deal, but they said my card wouldn't work and that I should try a retail version. SO I went through Blizzard's online downloading site, shelled out 20 bucks...only to see that now I have...not sure how to explain it, but I have two facets of my account now?

In layman's terms...the trial account still exists, and I now have a full retail version...but I want the character from the trial account ON the retail version. This didn't exist when I played all those centuries ago, so I'm kind of confused why my retail version didn't just absorb the trial one.

Help?

I apologize if this situation has caused any confusion, Aralyna. It appears that authentication key that was purchased from the Blizzard Online Store was used to create a new account instead of upgrading the trial account you had been using.
