I can't take a name on a certain server! What's going on? Is it a bug on my end?
A GM freed up a name for me that someone who's been inactive for a LONG time has been holding.
Yet, i can't take the name! Is it me that's bugged or the server?
What do i fix on my end? Should i reinstall WoW?
It's a REALLY popular name that could easily be taken!

Hello Puppy,

As long as the name wasn't take in the mean time I would say Open another GM ticket to ask them to see if they can create a toon with that name on your realm. Do a search in the Armory to verify the toon's name is not found on that realm anymore:

http://www.wowarmory.com/

If you want I can try creating the toon on your realm, since once I delete it, the name should be available immediately. Just don't post that info in here, email me instead, send email to [email protected] with Attn: Radoslawn in the subject line. This way we can see if it's something on our end or something going on with your game, though rather doubtful.

Hello Puppy,

Okay, so I contacted my GM connection, a specialist in the field by the name of Selakoya, she completely rocks, and basically someone that had that name did a character name change, which reserves the name for 30 days, and this was done yesterday so exactly 30 days from today. After the reservation goes away you can try creating a toon with the name you sent me. Also my contact found it interesting that you have another toon with the name on another character from the same field of interest, hehe.

The regular GM's just didn't have the ability to see that data, otherwise they would have given that info to you.

So basically in exactly 30 days try creating the toon once more with that name. Or are you that initiated the name change ?

Hello Puppy,

To be honest I have no idea about the other person, just don't have the ability to get that info and my GM specialist left for the day, sorry. Anyway you can ask your friend.

Either way, I've found another way to keep you as a player for 30 days, haha, just kidding. I would ask about this in this Customer Service Forum, perhaps they can help you out. They might have the ability to look further into this.

I think its ridiculous that a GM will force a name change on somebody else no matter how long its been inactive for just because somebody else wants it. I hope the OP never gets the name just because they feel entitled to get it.

I think it important to point out that you do not know our criteria for granting such requests, Airilynn. :)

Puppy, I will look into this and see what I can find out. I must state that this is in spite of the earlier comments that you made on page one.

Alvraen was providing a friendly warning that bumping is not necessary and actually is against our Code of Conduct. You should only bump a thread when it falls off of the first page. Though we try to get to as many threads as we can we may miss some threads and popping it back onto page one may allow us to see your thread and address it.

The GM says someone took the name on this realm already, I personally don't believe him because the name i want can't be added via 'friends list' and scroll of resurrection displays 'player does not exist'

A Game Master has access to accurate and current information where you may not, they did provide an accurate response. Both of the methods you used could be used to determine if a name may be available in some situations. That doesn't mean that they will work in every case though, as it did not work in this case.

Q u o t e:
I am determined to fight this bug and bring it's attention to blizzard so they can fix it and it won't happen to anyone else again.

Unfortunately this isn't a bug, Puppy, the name was taken soon after it was made available.

Regardless of the criteria it still doesn't make it right. Thats like me stealing somebodies identity for my own use just because they they have been dead for a couple years and don't use it anymore.

I really have to disagree, it isn't remotely the same. Stealing someones identity includes personal information that is specific only to them. Stealing someone's identity is usually done with nefarious purposes in mind regardless of if the person is living or dead.

A Character name is exclusive to the realm it is created on, if someone else had the same name and transferred to the realm that had a character with that same name the transferring character would be required to change their name. Now in certain cases, when someone inquires on a names availability we may be able to free up the name; there are several factors that determine if such a thing is possible.

In either case, if you believe our policies should be changed to reflect your opinions on the matter you are welcome to post in the Suggestion forum. Our developers and policy makers read that forum frequently, and take into consideration all suggestions, even if they are unable to directly reply to them.
