So, I'm in the middle of a faction change from allies to horde on my druid. I wanted to use the name Callisto which I checked the armory first and no one in wow is using (except a single guild with no members).

It's from greek mythology and is associated with Artemis the goddess of the hunt and specifically references the constellation Ursa Major as I intend to be a white (north pole) druid tanking bear.

It absolutely will not let me use the name saying it's unavailable when it clearly isn't. A quick google search shows a bunch of modern characters who use the name, such as some minor character in Xena and apparently some chick in pirates of the carribean(?) 3 a well as a million companies, a moon of jupiter, an indie rock band etc.

The one thing that sticks out is apparently it's an obscure Marvel Comic book character, and they are notorious for copyright take down notices. I would hope a corporation as big and powerful as Blizzard wouldn't be intimidated since there is a huge prior use the of name before them (created by greeks > marvel comics).

I would like to know the reason for the name ban before I assume anything. I think this is wrong.

I wouldn't call the once leader of the Morlocks obscure, but people can't be expected to know everything. :D

Unfortunately, Avaricious, some names are simply part of the reserved list. This may mean that part of the word or a variation of it may have been found to be inappropriate or used in an advertisement line.

It may be that the name is being reserved for future content (which is a likely scenario).

If you believe you should be permitted to use the name and you are welcome to post in the Suggestion forum with that request, if it was removed from our reserved list it would need to be done so by one of our Developers.

Q u o t e:
I believe he saw that your original post was edited by Vrak and mistakenly thought the name had been redacted. It would appear, however, that something else in your post warranted removal or alteration, perhaps in the title.

I removed the adjective describing the quality of the indie band. :)
