It indeed appears that your friend created a new account when using the authentication keys that came with his Battle Chest instead of upgrading his existing Recruit a Friend trail account.
As Daryenn has suggested, it would be best for your friend to contact the Billing and Account Services department at his earliest convenience so that we may attempt to establish a link between the 2 accounts. Additionally, I recommend that you send your friend another Recruit a Friend invitation, and direct him to
not use this one until he has contacted the Billing department.
