It used to be that warriors were the de facto tank class.

So much so that when you started a warrior, he came with a 1H weapon and shield.

It was like the World of Warcraft was telling you at level 1, "You're a warrior. Your job is to take a beating. Get used to it."

Since 3.3, level 1 warriors come with a 2h sword.

The only class that gets a shield?

A shaman.

The only shield-toting class that officially can't tank.

Changes like this happened to avoid confusion for players starting the game. While leveling with a sword and shield is possible, in a lot of ways it is easier to level with a two-handed weapon and ... well... many players feel more awesome that way.
