Hello everyone,

As we were recently discussing our long terms plans for Mists of Pandaria Classic’s realms, we all felt that the “mega realm” direction used to great success in Season of Discovery and then Classic Era Anniversary has led to an almost universally improved player experience, with availability for grouping at all hours, Auction House health and a massive pool of players for Guilds to pull from. We believe it will also have such a positive effect for Mists of Pandaria Classic too.

Since these moves are very disruptive we felt that starting this process sooner rather than later would be for the best, even though we know many of you are currently quite happy with the health of your specific realms, so we appreciate it if this feels sudden or uncalled for, but we do think you’ll enjoy the results once the dust settles!

With next week’s maintenance and patch deploy on September 23rd we will be enabling Free Character Transfers on US Mists of Pandaria Classic realms to the destination realm Pagle. The PvP realms in the region will also be re-flagged as PvE to better reflect their current faction war status. Players on previously PvP realms wishing to engage in a PvP experience once more will have the option of moving to the Grobbulus (RP-PvP) realm, this realm will also have forced faction balancing enabled. This unique realm has withstood the test of time and remained a hot bed of world PvP, and we will be working to make sure that it remains faction balanced. If you wish to get a taste of what Mists of Pandaria might have looked like on a contested PvP realm, this will be your chance!

Full list of Free Character Moves:

Faerlina → Nazgrim
Mankrik → Galakras
Benediction → Ra-den
Atiesh → Lei Shen
Whitemane → Immerseus
Bloodsail Buccaneers → Pagle
Sulfuras → Pagle
Windseeker → Pagle
Azuresong → Pagle
Westfall → Pagle
Old Blanchy → Pagle
Ashkandi → Pagle

Nazgrim, Galakras, Ra-den & Lei Shen are “virtual” realms running on Pagle, just like connected realms players on these realms will see a “-Nazgrim” appended to their name, all character and guild names will be available on each one of these virtual realms, but all players will be able to join guilds, raids, dungeons with anyone in the connected realm group.

Faerlina → Grobbulus (RP-PvP)
Benediction → Grobbulus (RP-PvP)
Whitemane → Grobbulus (RP-PvP)

The AU realm Arugal will also switch to PvE to enable both factions to play in this region. AU realm health will be monitored and your feedback appreciated, we understand that merging AU realms into US realms results in a significant rise in latency so we will wait till this merge is overwhelmingly requested.

Pagle & Grobbulus will have their realm caps increased to effectively unlimited. No additional latency or performance issues are expected as a result of this consolidation of players. The layering/sharding systems in the game distribute load regardless of a realms capacity. Expected times to process your character transfers will vary greatly depending on demand, we have seen previously under extreme load this process take several hours so plan accordingly, under normal circumstance the processing time is 2-5 minutes.

Transfers to Pagle are not time limited, you and your guilds may take as much time as you wish to plan your moves, you may also remain on your original realms if you wish, but the source realms will be closed to new players and will slowly shrink. We have seen overall increased satisfaction and engagement when players are on these larger “mega realms” and we believe this will offer you the best experience for the rest of your time in Mists of Pandaria.

Transfers to Grobbulus may be halted for either faction temporarily without warning to ensure that faction balance is maintained, if you plan on transferring with a group we would recommend you all do so at once.

We thank you for joining us on this Classic journey and look forward to seeing this amazing community united together.

Please note, feel free to grab names now, but please refrain from intentionally blocking others names, we have and will take action against people proven to be acting maliciously.

Additional names will be available on patch day as we will be reigning in the date that we consider “inactivity” for Mists of Pandaria Classic to free additional names for incoming transfers.

For the Pagle mega server, we will soon be opening a poll to vote for a new (or the same if you like!) name for this realm so that it feels unique. Looking back, it seems we didn’t launch a realm during Mists of Pandaria, so this will be a chance to pick the first ever Mists specific realm name. I’ll get back to you after generating a list!

Thanks to a great idea by one of the original Classic engineers, we may have just stumbled on a nice solution to folks concerns around naming availability that should give everyone ample opportunity to preserve their names. We’ve a couple of things to test in the morning as it is dusting off some tech we haven’t used in a hot minute but if it goes smoothly we’ll release details asap.

Update! We hear your feedback on character and guild names loud and clear, we knew this would be a very painful point but felt that the overall long term health of the play experience would outweigh it.

But! Late last night we did realize there was more we could do here.

The following realms will now Free Character Transfer to five new destination realms that are pre-connected to Pagle.

Faerlina → Nazgrim
Mankrik → Galakras
Benediction → Ra-den
Atiesh → Lei Shen
Whitemane → Immerseus

Character names and guild names are all unique on each realm, but all realms will be connected together able to join other guilds on other realms in the group and raid, dungeon and PvP together.

We hope that this solution will give everyone as much opportunity to secure the names that they have come to cherish.

These realms will be open and waiting for you with the character moves on Tuesday 23rd after realms go Live after maintenance.

The other realms not listed have been closed for some time and have very few players left on them, I unfortunately couldn’t justify creating whole new realms for the handful of players left on them. They have been closed so long that anyone left on them is likely seeking a solo experience and unlikely to move anyway, as they could have done anytime in the last few years. I hope that clears up why they weren’t listed!

The expensive part of Connected Realms is the database work to consolidate everyone’s data, this is the part that we we love to do for you but just do not have the time, it is a very old and expensive process in time and manpower that we just can’t pull off here.

This route creates a connected realm like environment that people can transfer themselves into with each realm having a different destination hopefully ensuring everyone can secure their existing names.

Hey folks,

We just wanted to give everyone an update and reassurance as we head into the night, the character transfer system is… busy. Very, very, very busy. Our client and the system doesn’t handle this level of busy very well so as many of you are aware you’re seeing various error messages. We want to assure you that we are still successfully transferring many, many thousands of characters per hour and no data is being lost.

The most helpful thing you can do for the system at this stage is avoid logging into any character you have queued up for a transfer. The transfer code needs to acquire a “lock” on your character data to proceed and it cannot do this if the character is logged in, it will also slowly retry less and less often to protect itself from… itself. What we’re seeing right now is a massive backlog of characters that the system can’t proceed on.

We believe at this time the vast majority of transfers will process without issue over night once folks log out and incoming requests subside, we thank you for your patience and we’ll keep you updated.
