A question about buying WoW.

So I got an email awhile ago offering me a free trial of WoW since I bought SC2 when it came out. I've been bored and thought I would give it a shot since its been so popular. As you can see from my avatar I have a dwarf paladin up to level 60, the max level I can go right now, and did it all through questing so I thought the flow of the game was nice. I've been doing some research about purchasing the game but have come across a disturbing conclusion which leads me to my question.

If I wanted to start playing WoW right now I would have to buy the original WoW, plus the BC expansion (the blizzard store has a chest of the two games for 40 bucks), then I'd have to buy the WotLK expansion for another 40 bucks and then the new expansion (cata) for another 40 bucks. So I'd have to pay $120 bucks to buy the game? I'm assuming I get the first month free?

The only reason I ask is I come from EQ2, Warhammer, and Aion (briefly) with the bulk of my time (5+ years) spent in EQ2. The thing with EQ2 is when a new expansion comes out it includes the original game and all previous expansions up to that point. I wouldn't have to buy EQ2 and then the 4 expansions or whatever they have out now all together. It would be one game. Is that right or am I missing something?

The game you received from us, Acuas, from the SC2 offer was the full version - you do not have to purchase the original World of Warcraft game, and you were given a month of game time for free. All copies of the original game come with a free month of play.

We do require that each expansion be purchased in order, but we do offer a few ways to reduce the cost. The battlechest you mentioned is once of them, but if you log into your Account Management page and click the upgrade on the right side, you can also view an offer to upgrade digitally all the way to Cataclysm at a reduced price (I believe it's a total of 15% off what it would otherwise cost).

We have been known to offer other deals in the past (for instance, during Black Friday, we offered the first three games for 5/5/10 dollars respectively), so you may want to watch for such promotions in the future.
