I would really believe the trojan, keylogger, phishing theories....if I hadn't worked in IT for the past 20 years and make a living removing infections from other people's computers. Hence the reason I only use Firefox or Opera on a Linux OS.

I find it much more plausible that there was a recent software update on their server that broke something....very similar to how some updates from Micro$oft often break drivers and such on the Windows OS.

If you've ever shared your account information with a friend or loved one, or logged in from a potentially infected PC, then your account could have been put at risk. Phishing attempts have grown very elaborate as well, so it would be understandable if such an attempt was successful as well.

Suffice to say that the issue did not arise on our end =/. Acknowledging that is the first and most necessary step in taking the appropriate measures to secure your account in the future.

At any rate, I got through to Billing finally, reclaimed the account....changed email addy's passwords, the works.....and now will cave in to the Authenticator (this thing so reminds me of the mafia selling insurance to small business owners...lmao). And yes, I know there is no 100% secure system....ever. You can not protect from that which is unknown or yet to be developed. I tell my clients that all the time.

I'm glad that you were able to recover your account!

You may not need to actually purchase an Authenticator if your mobile device and provider are compatible with the Mobile Authenticator. Have you examined that option?
