"Quest for the Ultimate PC" Concerns

I am seriously concerned over the new contest with Dell, as it seems that without my consent my personal information, Real Name, Address, Phone Number, will be disclosed to Dell Computers for the purposes of this contest.

My earlier attempt at finding out whether this was the case was promptly shunted to General Spam..er..forum, and ignored.

@ present it seems the only way to "opt out" is to make sure you don't complete 25 in game quests.

EDIT: Removed angry kneejerk reactionary sentence also refrenced in original title as self moderation in light of this becoming the new "de-facto" contest thread.

8. Collection of Information. The information collected to enter the Contest will be used to contact you in the event that you are chosen to receive a prize. Additionally, Sponsor will use this information for marketing purposes, and to contact you regarding offers, promotions and other Contest related to this and/or other products distributed by Sponsor. In the event that you are under the age of eighteen (18) years and submit an entry to Sponsor, Sponsor will delete, erase or destroy any and all personally identifiable information that is obtained from the entry.

This is very true. Keep in mind, however:

Q u o t e:
1. Eligibility. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT, INC. (REFERRED TO HEREIN AS THE "SPONSOR") IS THE SPONSOR OF THIS WORLD OF WARCRAFT "QUEST FOR THE ULTIMATE PC" CONTEST ("CONTEST")...

Blizzard Entertainment is the sponsor of this contest and we already have the personal information to which you're referring. We will not be giving any of this information out to Dell.

Is there a way to opt out of the contest? yet still be able to complete the quests during that time period? I don't want to be entered for a lame Dell computer, and I don't want to stop questing for that period of time either.

As this is not a contest sponsored by a third party, I do not see a way for "opting out."

Q u o t e:
So which is it, 13 by August 14? or 13 by August 21st?

This information has been forwarded to our Web Team for clarification. Thanks for noticing. = D

Since they seem to be locking other threads on teh topic and forwarding them to this thread ...

Any way you could change the subject to let others know it actually deals with the contest?

You got it. ; )

I have just further inquired into the nature of this contest for those concerned about personal information and promotional offers. It appears that my initial response regarding "opting out" was incorrect. I do apologize for this. Please review the following from our Online Privacy Policy:

Q u o t e:
What choices do I have regarding the collection, use, and distribution of my personal information?

Blizzard allows you to control the way that we use personal identifying information that we might obtain. At the time you provide personal information, Blizzard may give you the option of declining any future offers or information about new products, promotions, or services. In addition, many of the "mailings" Blizzard may send you, such as newsletters, have procedures within them to cancel the receipt of any future mailings.

If at any time you wish to opt out of having your personal information shared with third parties and/or receiving information from Blizzard (via e-mail or postal mail) about new products, services, or promotions, you can do so. You may contact us at Blizzard Entertainment Privacy Policy, Attn: Opt-Out Administrator, 6080 Center Drive, Los Angeles, California 90045. You can also contact us by e-mailing us at opt-out@blizzard.com. Please indicate what publications or services you no longer wish to receive so that we may better address your needs.

We will see to it that those who have chosen to opt out will be omitted before the contest drawing begins. Whether one chooses to opt out of this contest or not, I do not believe arguing over the guidelines of the contest is required by any means. = p

Additionally, Nethaera has created a brief FAQ about this contest on our General forum:

Woohoo! Quebec gets #!@@ed again! Thanks blizzard! Wait..

As I believe was already iterated in this thread, were you to read the whole discussion in which you are participating, it was not our decision to intentionally exclude Quebec. It would behoove you to check with your provincial government regarding charity and contest laws in Quebec. You may even want to google "The Regie des Loteries et Courses du Quebec" and see what you find.

QFT. I'm in this boat as well.

Batta: Does the opt out notice have to come from your registered email address? Also, can I specifically ask to not be included in any further offers and such unless I request to opt-in?

I do believe it would be required that the email be sent from the registered email address on account record. You can request to "opt out" of all future promotional opportunities and contests.
