Recruit a Friend accounts not linked in game

A couple months ago, I sent my friend a guest pass for RAF. He never had time to play, so it expired. However, he decided to start playing again, and since his previous RAF had expired, I sent him a new guest pass for RAF. He told me he downloaded and created a new account and trial, but was never prompted to enter the code the guest pass gives. On my account management, it says that my account is linked with his, but in-game we recieve no RAF benefits.

Also, while this is not yet clear, I think when making his battlenet account, he merged his old account AND new trial account onto the same battlenet account.

A few changes were recently made to the account creation process; this may explain why your friend may have accidentally created the account without using the key contained within your Recruit-a-Friend e-mail. To create a Recruit-a-Friend trial account your friend must follow the instructions contained within the e-mail:

Q u o t e:
1. Create a Battle.net® account at http://us.battle.net/account (if you already have a Battle.net account, simply log in.)
2. Under the "Manage My Games" section, click on "Add a New Game."
3. Enter this Authentication Key: <AUTHENTICATION KEY>

IMPORTANT: You must use this key to receive Recruit-a-Friend benefits!
If you start a Free Trial without this key, or activate a full product without first starting a free trial with this key, you and Brandon will not receive any of the leveling bonuses and other perks of the Recruit-a-Friend promotion listed below.

If the account has been created but not upgraded, please have him re-create the account. The account has already been upgraded, he'll need to contact our Billing Department during normal business hours using one of the following numbers:
