We wanted to build on the fishing tournament idea with the Northrend Fishing Derby but also make it available at a time that is very different from the original one so hopefully one or the other is more accessible to more people.

If they had the same rewards then that MAY be a valid argument. As it is I'd have to ditch a raid to do the tourney, as would anyone else in my guild that wanted to do it. Not healthy!
The tournament in Stranglethorn has been there for quite awhile now so the one in Northrend will probably be sitting there and waiting for you to be ready.

With all due respect, Bornakk, what does the Stranglethorn tournament have to do with the Northrend one? The Stranglethorn tournament doesn't award an heirloom ring and is still plagued with buggy fishing schools. And it's not like the number of people participating in the Stranglethorn tournament is going to go down. People who can make both tournaments for the achievement are going to do both, not one or the other.
Well since both work for the achievement they are somewhat connected, but the point of the statement you quoted was to point out that it will be there for quite awhile.
