Blizzcon pet redemption

I received an email this morning from a sender labeled Blizzcon, purporting be providing the authentication number to redeem for my Grunty. However I'm very picky about how I handle my my World of Warcraft account security.

The following information is provided as the address of the sender:

BlizzCon <[email protected]>

Further down the email the following pages are provided to redeem the number provided:

http://www.blizzcon.com/pet

This is the address that appears in the text of the email but the following is what the actual location of the embedded link goes to:

http://mailman.netcraft.co.il/t/r/l/dkxp/yhuragt/r

So my question is simple is this on the up and up or is this an attempt at a scam?

I applaud those of you who've taken an active interest in your account's security and remain up-to-date on the threat of phishing emails. This sort of caution is good and I thank you for checking the veracity of the links in question before proceeding.

To note, http://www.blizzcon.com/pet is a legitimate, Blizzard-sponsored website. If you receive an email from an @rayv.com address with this URL and a Grunty redemption code included, but are wary of clicking on any hyperlinks within emails, you may either type the URL into your browser directly or simply use the hyperlink I've provided within this post.

With that said, congratulations on the reception of your Grunty pet, and may you find enough Zerglings to sate your little marine's bloodlust. :)

Q u o t e:
Ever since switching to a battlenet account instead of my old wow account I get 2 maybe 3 emails a week with this kind of phishing scheme.

Blizzard Entertainment does not sale or share the email addresses of our clients, but if you are receiving such emails, Twinkerbelle, this means that your email is not secure as it possibly can be and perhaps even publicly available.

My advice would be to set up a new email address and register it to your Battle.net account. When selecting the username, please ensure that it does not sync up with any attached WoW accounts or names/IDs you may use online. Keep this address as isolated as possible and do not use it for anything else save for your Battle.net account registration.

Q u o t e:
Blizzard why did you send out this email like a keylogging scam email? Why does it go to Italy? I don't get it.

Blizzard Entertainment is not issuing these emails; they are being sent by RayV (those who provided our internet stream for BlizzCon). The link included within, though (http://www.blizzcon.com/pet) is an official Blizzard link associated with Grunty redemption. This link is also provided on the physical cards BlizzCon attendees received for their Grunty codes.

If you do not wish to use the hyperlink provided within the email, that's understandable. You may physically type out this address into your browser or use the hyperlink I've provided.

Q u o t e:
Also please allow us to use capital letters in our passwords, your security sucks.

I would encourage you to post this idea within our Suggestions Forum. We're always happy to receive feedback regarding our game and would certainly appreciate yours.

With that said, though, password-sensitive passwords would unfortunately not protect against most keyloggers or phishing attempts. =/

If you're concerned, some additional security steps may be found here, though:

Q u o t e:
Are you saying that if we do not receive the email from RayV by tonight that something went wrong? Or are you just saying that if we redeem the code and do not receive the pet in an in-game mail that means that something went wrong?

Asirr has already claimed his/her Grunty redemption code, but has not yet received the pet in-game. I'd encourage you to contact RayV directly for any questions you may have regarding the reception of the redemption code email. :)

Bumping this thread to quickly note that we've confirmed with RayV that the website through which the http://www.blizzard.com/pet hyperlink will redirect before reaching our Battle.net login page (http://us.battle.net/account/blizzcon.html?rhtml=y) is legitimate and used simply for tracking purposes.

We still encourage you all to exercise caution when clicking on any hyperlinks contained within emails, though, and continually educate yourselves on computer and account security. For some great tips and suggestiosn, please be sure to check out the following sticky. :)
