Fine line between casual/serious?

Hi everyone, I just have a few questions, and a generic statement. This is my 2nd toon ever ( 1st being a lock I only leveled to roll a DK ) and I'm at crossroads with my experience thus far.

First, let me say I dont consider myself a hardcore player, I dont read the lore, I never raid, and I've never arena'd in my life. But, I play EVERY day, for 3-4 hours a day, more on my days off from work, I'm 21 and have a full time job by the way. I walk around and see all of these toons, some of which with over 35k HP, and decked all in all purple, with a super nice weapon, and I tell myself " THATS what I want my toon to look like one day "

But, is that really ever going to be a possibility, especially since I dont know the 1st thing about raiding or pvp? ( check my record..its not good ) my friends think WOW is a big waste of time, and generally think its pointless because there's no way to ever finish the game, in a traditional sense, which i've thought about as well.

Questing isn't really fun anymore, kill 20 of this, bring back 5 of these, I haven't had many quests I've actually enjoyed doing. But I still play, I'm quite sure why, but I do, I still get enjoyment out of it, its a temporary escape from the real world, and I appreciate the game for the relaxation it offers. I'm just not sure if I should ramp it up, or scale it down.

Thanks in advance to all who reply. Alliance included ;)

Don't give up on becoming the character you want to be. It may take some doing and a little bit of socializing, but you'll be able to get there in your own time. You're also in for a treat, at level 68, you'll be able to move on to Northrend and experience some very cool new quests that are a change from the arch-types set by classic World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade. Raiding and PvP are both skill that can be learned with time, so dedicate a bit of your game time to finding battlegrounds or arena matches (skirmishes) to hone your PvP skills, and try putting together your own PvE content runs. There are many ways for you to find great information on what to expect in encounters and even how to lead successful PuG raids. So, continue to have fun and work your way up the leveling ladder and, soon enough, your character will be the one someone else is looking up too.
