We’re always glad to get feedback and thank you for posting.
SSOTD The screenshot of the day has been going for about 5 years now. As such, that’s a LOT of screenshots that have been posted: 365 days times the number of years World of Warcraft has been around. Because of this, it becomes really hard to get original shots or shots that we haven’t seen before. Imagine looking over 5,000 screenshots of people sitting in a Catapult pretending to be shot by that catapult.
We’re completely dependent on the screenshots submitted. If there aren’t any good shots to pick from, we pick from those available. If you don’t like what we’ve selected, we welcome you to submit your own screenshots, or please point out what exactly you don’t like. For the shot mentioned it was posted because it was a decent shot. It would be really awesome if the site had some sort of voting or thumbs up/down system, but there really is no way to gauge the feedback on the shots beyond the hits on the web site.
Here’s some more about the process: we receive several hundred screenshots a day. We go through those and continue to grab a few screenshots per week until we have enough to update our viewer. It’s not a random process and every screenshot submitted is looked over.
Because the selection is based upon personal preference, you may sometimes disagree over the screenshots posted. We have used a random process in the past or on other sites and the quality of the shots that show up was much lower. Since we started filtering it and really spending a large amount of time on the SSOTD, we’ve seen the hits go through the roof. It’s one of our most successful community content projects.
We realize people do get sick of certain themes that we repeat such as large groups of mounts, druids dancing, etc, but these themes are VERY popular. If you have suggestions for other themes we would like to hear them but we can only pick from the shots that are submitted.
As mentioned earlier, the hits for the SSOTD are amazing. The stats for them have been calculated over the last few years and we see visits of many millions per year. So, while some people don’t like them, many other people do so please keep that in mind when viewing them.
In the beginning we did shots with just nice environment scenes. Once we had shown just about every inch of the world, we moved on to other subjects such as raids, dungeons, etc. The SSOTD is also dependent upon new content being added to the game. When we see a patch with new things, we get a ton of new screenshots that we can now use on the site. You have to remember that we ALSO have tons of dungeon and other screenshot topics posted here:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/content-index.shtml#fanscreenshot . All of these topics are unavailable for the SSOTD unless the shot is something amazing beyond what was posted there. That also somewhat limits the pool.
Comic Contest We are really limited in the choices we have available. Comics are not easy to create to get them to be both great looking and funny. Also, each time an artist wins, they typically are done posting new comics for the year. That removes one artist from the pool. We pick from the best we have available. For some months we have a lot of great comics while other months the quality may be a bit lower. We try our best to change the prize each year to encourage new entries. This contest has been ongoing for 4 years and has a ton of views. It’s one of the top viewed content on the site. Again, we can’t control what entries we receive. We do try to only post the “best” of what we have.
