Last night I was talking to a NPC turning in quests at the D.E.H.T.A. Encampment. A mage and a rogue from the other faction were lurking around, and the mage kept running through me and standing in the same place. I checked to make sure I wasn't flagged PVP and it was definitely turned off (I hadn't even been PVP'ing earlier, so there was no reason for it to be on). Nevertheless, as I'm in dialog with the NPC, one of them starts dealing damage to me. I again looked at my PVP flag and it was still off, but after a moment, I think my toon parried or something in response to the attacks, and suddently my PVP flag is on and before i can even get out of the dialog with the NPC, I'm ganked. (As an added bonus, they camped me for about 20 minutes.) Every time I died, I tried unflagging, but it was already marked as off each time. The last time, I let the timer run 5 min before getting my corpse, and as soon as I got it, the flag turned back on with a 5 min timer (maybe that's normal). What isn't normal (I think) is that after I finally got back to Valiance Keep and let the timer run out again, it started back at 5 min. It even reset again after I went to Stormwind. After about 10 more min of being stuck in PVP, it finally turned off for real (after I went to Outland)...ironically, right before I started doing the PVP daily quest (yes, I do like some PVP, but not when I'm ambushed 2-on-1 while turning in quests!).
Sooo,
(a) how the heck did someone make me go PVP when I didn't want to?
(b) how to I stop it in the future?
(c) is this actionable (seems completely wrong on a PVE server)? and
(d) is there some aspect of PVP that would reset the PVP flag after numerous 5 min cooldowns without activity?
