There is no justification. Cataclysm is a RPers worst nightmare.
I find this statement curious.
We're not retconning existing races. The storyline is moving forward. The very essence of a story arc is to bring
change to what has come before. Stories often come to a point where what was previously held true is reversed due to present circumstances.
By hearing that Night Elves are becoming Mages and Tauren are becoming Paladins, for example, it's the equivalent of skipping ahead in a book and happening to read a page where what was established before seems to be taken as false. What you're missing is the story in between, and that's a story we plan to deliver in the game itself, in varying degrees depending on the severity of the change. We've already begun some of it.
No, we're not keeping the world stagnant. Cultures can and do adapt in the face of disaster and new information.
Remember, if nothing else, that role playing is an act of collective storytelling. As we're in charge of the world, we're presenting you with our next step in storytelling. As role players, you get a great deal of material to use in driving your own characters forward. In terms of delivering story, at least, this is one of the best steps we've taken for role players yet.
To answer the original question of the thread, we plan to establish why. Remember that not all Highborne changed into other races.
