Melee DPS is simply cheap.

I was in HoL. Full of elementals. I use lightning bolt only to find that that creature is immune to it. My DPS drops sharply for that section, while the melee DPS stays up just as high.
I was doing AV. I saw the smaller mobs surrounding the flag and used chain lightning, fire shock, thunderstorm, chain lightning, and they still killed me somehow (I was level 76). A warrior charges up, bladestorms, and kills them all. He was level 76 too.

Someone explain how this is fair, please.

Melee has different challenges that you simply don't think of because you, yourself, are not in that position. Each type of damage dealer has it's own particular type of limitations. Melee often has to be extremely aware of what it is that the monster/mob they are concentraiting on is capable of doing inside the area that is surrounding it. Generally, this isn't something that range damage dealers have to worry about. That is not to say that range does not have it's own finesse. Range damage dealing relies on knowledge of what the creature is capable of doing from a distance and being able to adjust or shift positions without losing too much casting time.

The moral of the story is, each style of damage dealing is a different type of play, and there are encounters where one type or the other may have an advantage over the other. Generally though, we attempt to balance that out evenly enough to make it a non-issue overall.

I remember having trouble against rogues, so I leveled one and learned so many tricks against them - I did the same with Hunters and Paladins.
