Why do guilds hate alts?

Every guild has different rules for alts. Some guilds don't really want you to play alts. Some guilds want only mains. Some guilds want all you alts in their guild or get mad. Some guilds have special rules for alts getting invites to raids or looting.

What I cannot understand for the life of me is why the heck does it matter? You are putting in the effort to play an extra toon, why should you be penalized? I have gotten so frustrated with this. Am I crazy to think that you should be able to play the toon you want to play when you want to play it?

Personally, I play way entirely too much WoW, and would love to be able to raid seperate ID's on seperate toons. I think that I should have the same allowances on both toons, within reason (I can understand the need for class balance and so on). I don't care if they are in the same guild if that guild has enough people to run second or third raid ids, but most don't. My solution I thought would be to have toons in different guilds that raid different times. For example one guild that raids 8pm server, one that raids midnight server, or one guild that goes tues thu fri and another that goes mon wed sat. Apparently this is unnaceptable and I should be spending all my effort on one toon in one guild, and just be bored when that toon is saved to all raids for the week!

I honestly haven't heard much on alt-hating but that is because my guild is filled with tons of alts. Generally I prefer that if people plan to play and gear their alts that they have it in the guild so that if we need to get in touch with them (say their got a new enchant or crafting recipe from a raid) they can help out the guildies who need them. We just made sure to track who's alt is who since the names get confusing at times, but overall the more alts the better - you never know when you'll need that other class to fill out the group.

Also, if they play an alt on another server/faction, that is fine by me - everybody can use a little bit of time with more peace than the craziness of the main guild.
