Replacing Gryphons with Portals

Following this logic you could ask a question like why do players have to earn levels instead of just getting them instantly?

While we have greatly improved the ability to travel over the years, we still want players to have to travel to get places. We want to keep the "world" in World of Warcraft and make it a conscious decision on where a player wants to go instead of just teleporting everywhere.
