Midsummer Festival A Pointless Waste of Time?

We're basically 'required' to spend a whole lot of time traveling around with the end goal in mind of getting a mount that will make us travel a little bit faster. The irony of this just struck me when reading slashdot's post: http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/06/28/0459209/Why-Dont-MMOs-Allow-Easier-Transportation?art_pos=25 "Why Don't MMO's Allow Easier Transportation?" I mean, I'm doing this quest to get the Meta so I can get around faster (my main has most of that achievement done) but I wonder if the time is really worth it. I mean, it can be sort of fun, but the whole paradigm needs to be questioned.

I realize Bliz has done some things to make it easier to get around, lowering level reqs on mounts and such, making them faster etc., but it still a huge amount of time I spend in this game not actually 'gaming' but traveling around, and the bottom line is that this doesn't contribute to my enjoyment of this game, other aspects of which I do quite enjoy. If one is to use the phrase 'less QQ, more pew-pew' as an example, what is travel but QQ, that is, time not spent in pew-pew mode.

While the thread title is a little off from the point you were making, we have allowed players to move around in the game faster as the years have gone by, sure, but we have to be careful not to go too far in this direction. It is the World of Warcraft and if we allow players to instantly teleport everywhere then the 'world' aspect gets shrunken down which we don't want to do.

Also, there are benefits to taking part in the Midsummer Fire Festival, on top of the achievements and items there is a fair amount of gold to make.
