Vanilla account and wotlk account?

I am trying to help a friend set up a vanilla account and game client on her computer. Right now she's using a 10 day free trail while she waits for her copy of the game to arrive. We went ahead and installed the game using my original cd's, so she'd have a copy of it installed, but we can't get it to actually play. Every time we open the game it tells us it needs to download a 4 GB file in order to update to the current version 3.01.whatever.

We just want to play the original game, which is already on the computer. Help.

It gets set up the same way you are experiencing it. You cannot log into the software, no matter what level your ACCOUNT is at, unless the software is up to date. If its not, it will patch it up before it allows you to log in.

So someone buying vanilla WoW right now, will still have to be at the latest WotLK version of the software to play, even if they only have access to the original WoW-related content.

This is absolutely correct. :)

In order to log in and play World of Warcraft, your WoW client (the software you install) needs to be upgraded to the at least the same level as the WoW account. If your client level happens to be greater than your account level, that's absolutely fine; however, if your client level happens to be less than your account level, no dice.

To break is down even further:

Playing a Classic account on a Classic client = Cool
Playing a Classc account on a BC or WotLK client = Cool
Playing a BC account on a BC or WotLK client = Cool
Playing a BC account on just a Classic client = Not Cool
Playing a WotLK account on a WotLK client = Cool
Playing a WotLK account on just a Classic or BC account = Not Cool

If you possess the WotLK DVD, just use that for all future installations. It contains all three clients (Classic, BC, and WotLK), so it should cover all your accounts' needs (minus patching). :)

ok guys i have a question
a person with a trial account and a peson with a full wotlk account
if the person with the worlk account gives the trial account person his vanilla wow cdkey will they both be able to log on at same time?

Not if it's been used, no - keys can only be used to establish one account ever.

Also, probably best to make a clean thread, this one is a couple months old.
