Activating trial account?

Hypothetical situation: lets say a friend had a 10 day trial account but still had wotlk installed on his computer from when he used to play.

Lets say he wants to play again and Blizzard says he can activate his trial account for 19.99. Will my friend be good to go or will he have to go out and purchase another copy of the game(s)?

He has all the old authentication keys from classic to wotlk but does not have access to the original account created with those keys.

Why would he no longer have access to that account?

If that is the case, regardless of what is already installed on the computer, he would have to buy all three versions of the game again, since keys are one-time use only, and work on only one account.

This is correct, keys are unique to a specific account and can only be used once.

New account means he needs new keys.

I guess what I want to know is, once he pay this 19.99 will he have to pay more money to upgrade the account to wotlk status even though he does't need to download the expansion itself?

He's trying to figure out the most cost effective way to play the game again.

*edit*

Thanks

Yes. Each expansion has a separate key, just like the original game does.

Those can only be used once as well. You aren't paying for the software really, you are paying for that access key.
