Battle.net account merging + new hack method?

My friends account was just hacked, and when they went to the password retrieval link from the main page and entered their account and email info, they got the following error message:

Q u o t e:
Because this World of Warcraft account has been merged into a Battle.net account, you will need to use Battle.net Account Management for this account service.

Now, I am not here necessarily to complain about my friends account being hacked, but more in line with why has blizzard enabled hackers to use this new battle.net account merging thing to block players from retrieving their password in these type of situations. Is this an unintentional side effect of the new system that was simply overlooked, or is there simply just a piece of the puzzle I haven't seen yet that would explain this scenario?

The account in question was definitely not yet linked to any battle.net account, so it is obvious that the hacker knew this would block my friend from being able to reset their password.

People who compromise accounts can use many methods to keep you from being able to retrieve your account. For example they could also compromise your e-mail account and change the e-mail address for your account.

If you keep your information secure there is no way for someone to compromise your account. Accounts that are already merges into a B.net account would not be able to be merged and have that information changed.

If you would like to present your views on the Battle.net account, Alyshea, it would be best to post in our Suggestion Forums. The Game Master Department did not design or implement this feature so commenting on it is a bit our of our field. :)

Is there by chance any way for my friend to retrieve any help for this now? They tried calling the support line but they aren't open today. Do they simply need to wait til monday?

I'm afraid not, only our Billing Department would be able to update contact information. Your friend may want to review the following threads for additional information regarding compromised accounts and computer security.
