So many, many alts.

I have 10 characters across two realms, one server for each faction. I have a character of every race, class (except DK, this is my main; I have 2 priests), and profession. Once I hit 55, I will inevitably make a DK as well bringing the total to 11.

I only started playing ~2 months ago, and have failed terrifically in leveling equally on my horde server, but on Alliance, leveling so many different classes and professions is great. I can use any armor/weapons I find, craft stuff for my own characters, join tons of guilds and have access to all their banks as well.

I started playing WoW for my friends who are always in danger of leaving me behind in leveling because while they only have one or two characters to worry about, I have 4 others on that server alone. However, throughout the game I'll be able to fulfill any role, craft anything I need, and make tons of money by finding what sells at the auction house and crafting/selling accordingly.

SO all in all, from my fellow altaholics, does this practice really pay off in the long run, or should I just level one main on each server and let surplus loot from that one trickle down to my alts to make leveling easier?

Only you can gauge the pay off. If you're having fun engaging content by creating and playing numerous characters, you should continue to do so. Focus on only one character if that sounds appealing. I have a feeling if you tried though, you'd quickly get the urge to play another. :P
