We go to play World of Warcraft. Taking a look at our LFG screen for Heroics, we see several Paladins waiting for Heroics. After finding members of a few other DPS classes, and finally a healer, we message each of these Paladins, one after the other, asking if they are willing to tank for us. With minor individual variations, each conversation goes roughly as follows.
Me:- "Hello, would you be willing to tank <Heroic> for us?"
Paladin:- "Sorry. I'm Ret."
Me:- "What's your other spec?"
Paladin:- "Ret."
Me:- "WTF? How does that work? How do you have two specs from the same tree?"
Paladin:- "Well you see, I have my PvP Ret spec, and my PvE Ret spec. I'm still Ret, but I have a couple of points moved around slightly to make each a little easier."
Me:- *Hyperventilating; possibly at risk of stroke* "#$%@&#(!!!"
Dual speccing is not going to cure the tank shortage. With any class capable of tanking, the above scenario is, in 99% of cases, the only thing it will cause.
People don't tank because people are selfish, not because they can't respec. Up until now, respeccing has just been a convenient excuse, however once dual speccing is brought out, they'll simply come up with another one.
