Why are private servers allowed to exist?

I know blizz has recently taken action against alot of private servers, but alot still remain. In fact, <the private server that shall not be named> is apparently holding ptr testing for the Wotlk expansion.

Why is this allowed to occur? To be honest, this stems from talking to irl/forum friends around teh interwebz who brag about having everything handed to them for free and being totally oblivious to their ignorance/scrubiness. I'd love to see EVERY big private server shut down, if only to wipe the grin off their faces.

Though Blizzard Entertainment is the Grand Poobah of World of Warcraft, any power associated with that title is subject to normal and due process. After all, Azeroth was not built in a day.

I can assure you that we do not support or condone the existence of private servers, my friend. Thus, should you discover any site, company, or player which hosts such an emulation, please send what information you possess to hacks@blizzard.com. :)

Ignorance of the rules will not grant you absolution, Thealmighty. It it thus in your best interest to understand that which governs the community of which you are a part.

(And it's spelled "Terms of Use." Not "that crap." Minor detail.)
