This all the way. There's no magical number that "should" reflect what a fair price is. If a firefly is going for 5500 on one server and 1500 on another, undercut each by whatever percent or gold amount you want. What people are willing to pay is what the "fair" price is for that particular server.
Sometimes it varies wildly, but just because one server has a much lower price doesn't automatically mean that the price is a "fair" one for all other servers.

The only pet I bought on my 75 pets journey was the Dark Whelpling, for 500g. I'm not going to lie, I felt it was a steal and almost gave it back to the seller.
After that, everything was farmed. My other 3 whelplings, my firefly , my Oozeling, even my Black Tabby (I'm Alliance).
I was really proud when I got my last Whelpling after 5 days of constant farming. Damn you Swamp of Sorrows.

It's 5k on my realm. I don't like Whelplings so I'd buy them just to get a little more near my adored Little Fawn.
I'd waste 5k gold on a Firefly or on a Black Tabby (ever dropped one near a Stinker? Hilarity ensues), but not on a Whelpling.
