So, people hate accented characters...

If I had the name Valdís, would I still be considered ~*unoriginal and uncreative*~ and never get a group invite for using a "special character" even though I was just using the correct spelling of an Icelandic name?

My cat would like to know.

I transferred one of my high level characters to another realm not too long ago and decided to use a special character upon being prompted to change the name. None of my other characters have them, but I'm actually enjoying having it -- I get far less whispers from random people asking for things.

I feel a sense of peace.

This. I couldn't care less about your dumb accents, but if Bob and Bôb whisper me at the same time asking for an invite, typing /inv Bob is easier than scrolling up, right clicking on Bôb, and choosing invite.

That would be an awesome coincidence, actually. I'll keep your point in mind though next time I get a whisper from Zaole and Zaol to invite Zaol since it's obviously the path of least resistance.

It's also easier to Armory Bob then the other guy.

I love the armory, but I'm not really using it for personal advertisement. I don't mind if I don't get any hits.

Two thoughts spring to my mind about this topic:

1) Isn't against the ToS to have a name with an accent like that? In that, character names aren't supposed to have weird symbols like that?

2) If you're purposely picking a name that makes it a hassle for others to interact with you in an MMO game, you have some severe social problems. @_@

1) No.

2) I don't think most people who pick names with special characters as a means to eradicate all interaction with others. Regardless, I completely disagree with your point. I don't believe a desire to diminish interactaction with other's in a game is a sign of social problems, let alone social problems of a severe nature. My mom enjoys doing her own thing, and has for two years. Some people just want to focus on the game itself.

I think social problems of a "severe" nature would be more like pooping your pants, immediately shutting off your computer and starting to weep upon receiving a whisper from another player. In any case, I think you slapping the label of social retard on another person just because they are different than you speaks a certain truth about how you view things.

I and many others actually don't care about the accent at all; it carries no significance. However, the previous point you attempted to sarcastically joke about with the "path of least resistance" is ironically true. If I'm deciding between two things which I have no opinion of, why not go for the easier one?

That's normal. Many players approach the social the dynamics of this game in a mechanical manner. "Because I don't know them, those aren't real people I'm working to create a group with, they are just a list of names and classes that have been customized to fulfill a need. All of my decisions will involve doing what's best and easiest for me". I'm not insulting you, this is just pretty standard.

I personally don't have a problem getting into groups when I feel the desire, and anyone who wouldn't want to group with me because of a character in my name can enjoy the company of anyone else they deem worthy on the realm.

I hate them just because in my opinion it lacks originality. We don't (well most of us) live in a country where people use accented characters like that. I constantly see names like Shádè, Sèphìrôth, Ìchîgô and more. These aren't names to be "original" or use a certain accent. This isn't being used for "Icelandic" meanings. There may be some of you out there who are using these characters for some special accent or meaning the majority of US/Canada WoW players most likely won't get.

But almost every time I see a name using these characters, it's the same kinds of names like Xxkenshinxx or Drrrizzzzzzt. Guess what, I've moved servers and couldn't carry my name because some jackhole had the name I've used for years. Did I use a stupid character key or add multiple letters to my name that don't belong? No. I tried to at least be somewhat original.

I could care less about "difficulty" in typing out the name or inviting someone. It irks the hell out of me. Just like the Vienna Boys Choir.

The irony of what you're saying is actually quite wonderful. You hate the names because they lack originality, and would prefer that everyone conform to your idea(s) of naming.

Not everyone is looking to be original. Not everyone feels as though they need to validate that they are both special and unique.

What point is there in going through the effort to create an optimal group? None of the 80 content is challenging, especially the 5 man stuff. I just say "lf2m dps <instance>" in trade and invite the 2 shortest names. We now have a group that will be able to race through the instance without a scratch, regardless of who I invited.

I don't make any judgments about players with accents in their names; that you talk about me perceiving you as "unworthy" is just putting words in my mouth. The only possible thing I could infer about an accented name is that the person appreciates receiving fewer annoying spam whispers, which appears to be your case.

Then again, if you want to dissociate yourself from me because you yourself assume that I perceive others negatively when I in fact do not, then maybe it would be best for me to shun you. ....wait, what?

You've missed my point completely. I'm commenting on the mechanical way people often perceive and treat those they don't know in an environment, such as a game world. While in such an environment it does change human relations. You're more greatly affected every moment you fail to realize that when interacting with another person in the game.

It seems as though you're just derailing the thread to come up with an argument to demean me.

I have not failed to consider that I'm interacting with other humans; there's nothing wrong with the "mechanical perspective" when there's no reason to use any other perspective, yet you described it negatively. Why?

Alright, I will end our discussion -- I think somewhere down the road you began felt attacked and perhaps I should've realized it sooner than now. I haven't been directing my comments at you, only in that I'm discussing the matter with you. The "You're" in my last statement applied to all of us.

It's interesting all the comments that focus on originality. I'm 29 years old and my whole life I've met so many people that just wanted so badly for everything about them and all of their actions to be original. What was odd to me for a time was that it wasn't enough for those same people to be original, they had to judge others who weren't at every opportunity. I think pointing out how unoriginal others were made many of them feel even more unique.

"everyone's a sheep, you know...well except me". I just can't connect with that type of thought process.

Do what you enjoy, be what you want. Regardless of outside influence. Don't stop liking the color orange just because too many other people begin to love it.
