Game crashes in character select screen

Blizzard Post
WoW allows me to get past the login screen, view the server select screen and even get to the character screen but as soon as I select a character the game crashes, failing to show even the load screen. I'm not sure what I need to post to get help with this issue but any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[Edit] I'll go ahead and post the error log as given to me in the Error Reporter. I'm currently playing on an 8600 MBP

Hello Tolvan,

Looks like there's a corrupted file in the game or the file is being blocked from being read. Try the following:

1. Select the World of Warcraft folder
2. press Command + i
3. in the World of Warcraft Info box, go to the Sharing & Permissions section
4. click on the lock and unlock it
5. make sure you have Read & Write permissions
6. click on the Burst icon ( cog wheel ) and select Apply to enclosed items**

** If using Mac OS 10.4.11, just click on the Apply to Enclosed items button.

Hello Tolvan,

Says it right in the error message:

App: /Applications/World of Warcraft/World of Warcraft.app
File: /Volumes/F2/usrbuild/xb/build/WoW_9506patch3.0.8/WoW/Source/Mac/../../../Engine/Source/Gx/CGxDevice/CGxDevice.cpp

So it's the file called : CGxDevice.cpp which was from the patch 3.0.8

Anytime you download a patch the permissions on the folder or within the folder's contents can get a permissions reset, so even if the folder says that it's okay the files inside it might not be.

Anyway, unless you installed something that is blocking the file from being read and you are comfortable with the WoW folder and it's contents having the right permissions, try removing the WTF Æ’older.

Hello Tolvan,

Sorry about that, I realized there was something else I could recommend that revolves around the fact that the game crashes at the character screen, and if the characters aren't coming in well, it would be the WTF folder that could need to be reset.

Hello Tolvan,

I was afraid of that, I have only one other option before the full uninstall/reinstal, sorry:

Repair Directory Procedure:

1. (re)start the computer
2. right after the computer starts press Cmd(Apple)+s until you get a black screen with white type
3. let go of the keys when this screen comes up
4. at the cursor please type the following: fsck -f -y and press return
5. please be aware that some of the procedures will look like they are frozen,
but are actually taking a long time i.e checking hierarchy
6. if anything had to be repaired, repeat step 4
7. once things are repaired type exit and press return
8. computer will boot into Mac OS

- if the above doesn't help though, it's time to start fresh, at least it's easier with having WotLK installer -

In order to remove World of Warcraft safely from your system, you will need to:

1. go to your Mac HD/Applications folder and move your World of Warcraft folder to the Trash
2. go to your Mac HD/Users/Shared folder and move the Blizzard folder to the Trash
3. go to your Mac HD/Users/your account/Library/Preferences and delete any files associated with WOW:
(some files may not appear due to non-use)

- com.blizzard.downloader.plist
- com.blizzard.Downloader.prefs
- com.blizzard.errorreporter.plist
- com.blizzard.Installer.plist
- com.blizzard.launcher.plist
- com.blizzard.World of Warcraft.prefs
- com.blizzard.World of Warcraft.survey.prefs

4. empty Trash

To reinstall:

For Original WoW:
5. Install from disc(s) or download the installer
- (downloading will get you the 2.3.0 version which may save you some patching time, if your disc has an older version)
6. patch to the latest version of the game

For Burning Crusade:

5. Install World of Warcraft form disc(s) then right afterwards install the Burning Crusade from disc(s) or download the installers
- ( What I would recommend is downloading the World of Warcraft Full Client Installer and patching it, since this will get you to version 2.3.0 to begin with and you will have less patches to download, and also you won't need to install the Burning Crusade. )
6. patch to the latest version of the game

For Wrath of the Lich King:

5. Install the Wrath of the Lich King from the DVD or download, which will install all versions of the World of Warcraft
6. patch to the latest version of the game

All installers can be downloaded from your account web site (you will need to log into your account): http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account

Hello Tolvan,

There's no repair.exe for the Mac side of World of Warcraft, unless we've been talking about any other operating system besides the Mac OS ?

Hello Kokomala,

If, once the patch downloads and starts the updater, you get another error, please let us know.
