CD key already used

So ive been playing the trial and yesterday I decided to go to target and buy the battlechest so i can can activate my account and play for real. I get home from target and put in my cd key for classic wow and it tells me that the key had already been used, I thought maby i have to put in the BC key and it activates both, nope that didnt work either. I called target up and explained them the problem and they said "no problem come on in and we can exchange it for you as long as you have everything that came with it and a receipt of purchase". I walk into target and hand them the game and the receipt and they say its against their policy to accept returns that have an activation key attached to it. I then went to a different target a few minutes away and they told me the same thing.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get a new game? I really don't want to spend $40 more dollars on a new box. If i call blizz tomorrow when they open will they be able to assist me with my problem?
