Are priests really this terrible?

So I am making a second attempt to level a priest. My first attempt ended at level 13 or something, but today I decided I was going to give it another go. Now, at level 8, I'm beginning to remember why I was so turned off by this class in the first place. Don't get me wrong, this is not a QQ thread, I'm just wondering if I'm doing something completely wrong. Here are my concerns:

- At level eight, I burn through about 3/4 of my mana to take on an enemy of equal level. Do the increases to a preist's mana as they level insufficient to keep up with the growing mana costs of their improved spells?

- At level 8, I have no effective means of crowd control. I am soloing at this point, and while I can usually deal with two enemies at a time, if need be, the battle will leave me in need of far greater recovery than with any other class I've played. Three enemies at a time, or even in rapid succession, and I'm toast.

What I'm thinking is that priests are not a viable class to solo, period. Is this accurate? What should I do? Thanks for any thoughts on this matter! :)

Edit: Punctuation and spelling

Different classes have different points in time when they begin to feel more powerful and self-sufficient. Priests generally are a bit weaker at the starting levels but begin to pick up a little later. You'll need to stick with it a bit longer than level thirteen to get the real feel of it.
