What the heck is a Draenei?

Actual conversation I’ve had.

“What’s on your hoodie? Is that a band or something?”
“No, it’s from a video game. World of Warcraft. It’s the seal of the alliance.”
“I think a guy in our IT department plays that. He’s kind of addicted. What’s the Alliance?”
“It’s made up of night elves, gnomes, dwarves, humans…”
“Okay, I guess I know what those are.”
“…and Draenei.”
“What the heck is a tranei?”
“They’re another race of space goat…things that came from another planet.”
“So they’re aliens?”
“No, not really. I guess not, gee I don’t know. They did come down on a spaceship, or maybe it was an inter-dimensional device…
Maybe I’m not explaining this right. They kind of look like blue demons.”
“So, they’re evil?”
“No! They’re really good actually…In fact they’re so good they came to the current planet to do more good. They’re demons before they went evil that are really really good.”

“That doesn’t make any sense.”
“Did I mention they have tentacles on their faces?”

How would you sum up the Draenei to someone who has no idea what World of Warcraft is? These guys are like the platypus of WoW: Hooves, tentacles, dinosaur tails, and a chest the size of a gorilla’s.
I’m usually at a loss for words whenever I try telling some one what my character is in this game. How do you explain to people what Draenei are without going through the long history?

Explaining something specialized to someone who isn't interested in what you're discussing (or has no experience in it) no matter what it is, is always difficult. Whether it's explaining a Draenei to someone or genetic code sequences. Sometimes it's better to go for simplicity without the details since most likely the person isn't going to be all that interested in them anyway.
