"Cataclysm cost me an arm and a leg to play"

Cataclysm is $39.99, and its not too expensive. However, for new players, they have to purchase 3 other editions before they can sepnd this $39.99 on Cataclysm. And that will be too expansive to buy 4 editions. Here's the conversation between me and one of my classmates:

Me: Hi dude, Have you ever heard about WoW? The new expansion Cataclysm just launched. I am playing it and its really cool! Wanna in?

Him: Yes, I heard it before and I am going to ask my parents to buy it for my X'mas gift. BTW, how much does the game cost?

Me: Er....the new expansion is $39.99, but you have to buy three previous editions: Vanilla for $19.99, TBC for $29.99, and WotLK for $39.99. Or if you buy these four editions in a bundle, it will be $99.99.

Him: $99.99 in order to play Cataclysm? Well, it cost me an arm and a leg to play. My parents won't spend that much of money.

So Bliz, now do u see the problem? I believe most part of your WoW profit comes from the subscription fee. The game itsef shouldn't cost that much. I understand you charge $39.99 for Cataclysm, but potential customers like my classmate can not afford that $99.99. So why don't u just low down the bundle price and attrack more ppl to buy it and play it and become long term loyal custombers?

Well, it's not necessary or maybe even advisable for a new player to immediately buy all expansions. When they get to level 70 in a few months that might be the best point to make that decision.

I would also expect the Battle Chest to be expanded at some point.

This sale was not advertised enough, and lots of old players who wanted to come back missed out.

It was on Blizzard.com, the WoW front page, the launcher, and the store website. Gaming sites had it advertised like crazy. What else could they do? They're not gonna have an international TV ad blitz for a 5 day sale...

As well as Facebook and Twitter! Also being the week of Black Friday most if not all retailers were also matching or closely matching our $5-$5-$10 sale.
