A DPS is a DPS: The new direction of WotlK

-----What is this about?----
This is to help get rid of the misconceptions of where Blizzard is taking Wow in WotlK. I have been seeing several people for the past few days posting rather long rants about what is “fair” and what is not “fair” I hope after posting this info that some of you either will be better informed or feel that you have a better grasp then just “heir say” I will be trying to present you with a section of facts and my views on them.

-----Background on me-----
To begin I am a Druid from old vanilla wow. I learned when I turned 60 that all I was allowed to do in guilds I tried for was heal because back in those days that is what a druid did. When BC came around I decided to find a class that fitted the role I wanted to play so I leveled a mage alt on alliance who became my new main (Jorold) Sense I wanted to play a range caster in end game I decided this was the path to go so I would not be forested to play a role I did not enjoy in raids.

-----Blizzards new outlook-----
Sense hearing Blizzards new out look on there game come WotlK of “Bring the player not the class” I was over joyed to say the least. I could finally go back to my druid and not be ridiculed to play a class I would enjoy the way I wanted to play it. But after reading and talking to other friends I soon found many people getting vary angry at this. I sensed the oncoming flow of ridicule for playing a druid and not wanting to main tank or heal. So lets look at wows history.

This is a game and in that light it is Blizzards choice and only there choice of what will happen to the game. Like any company they try to cater to the majority (casual players) not the minority (hard core raiders). For a player to be “skilled” they have to follow a few simple rules to be taken on to a successful raid:

1) You are able to listen and follow directions
2) You are able to perform your chosen task well
3) You are able to adapt to the situational around you

BC introduced more then ever raid stacking and encounters requiring a certain number of buffs for every one also I noticed the mighty “damage meter” started showing up as a design of who’s “skilled” and who’s “not skilled” Any one remember the days you were happy to just down new content and not decide who’s got the highest DPS? Any ways I am getting off topic sorry for that.

Welcome gents to Wotlk new game idea: “Bring the player not the class” This means if you sign up and spec up to do dps you will do it well there is no longer a big margin of who wins and who dose not win because of what class you picked to role. I know this is a novelty and a new idea to some and when they picked there class all they asked them selves is “What class dose the best at X job” This is a out dated and no longer supported role. And here is the proof:

-----The proof from GC-----
The design is for bears to be viable, end-game main tanks. The design is for cats to be viable, end-game melee dps. In both cases you are going to need the right talents, good gear, skill and companions who can back you up -- I don't mean to imply raiding will be easy. :)

If you want to do a little tanking and dps, you probably won't be as optimal at either, though you'll probably always be better at switching between the two than other classes. In order to be as good at tanking as the other classes, you might have to give up a few talents that maximize your dps, and vice versa. This is a good thing -- it lets you choose to actually be a main tank.

We are adding a new class to Lich King, as well as improving the raid viability of specs such as Arcane mage, Survival hunter and Balance druid. That means you have 30 available specs for 25 slots. There are two ways to design around this problem. One is that there are 25 mandatory specs and 5 that shouldn't be raiding. Boo. A more fun, interesting and ultimately fair direction is that you actually have some choices in who to bring. Imagine running a raid with no warrior tanks at all. :)

Don't worry about your bears. The armor and other changes were done to fix itemization issues, not to nerf druids. You've already gotten the ability to drink pots in bear form and benefit from weapon enchants and windfury. We have plenty of knobs to turn to make sure you can do your job even better than you could in LK.

This is directly pasted from a response Ghostcrawler gave at this thread: http://blue.mmo-champion.com/2/8537784293-feral-concerns-in-wotlk.html This was in response to druids who were afraid they be left back to ware they were in Vanilla wow and BC wow.

-----The choice is yours now-----
You now have a choice and chose it well I recommend for the amount of time and effort that goes into a character to pick a class off of what role (DPS / Healing / Tank) and mechanics (I like warring plate and having no shield to rely on) that fits you best. You may either –OR- go find another game “.” I’m sorry for sounding so harsh but

Very interesting thread.

I don't want to stomp on any of the discussion, so I will just add a few things.

1) We like this change overall, but it is a change. There are going to be some rough edges to smooth out and tweaks to be made. I ask you to defer any of the cheeky "why am I paying to beta test the game" responses. It's an MMO. Things evolve. You want us to make changes when things are off. Believe me. :)

2) We don't want to see anyone sitting on the curb in PvE or PvP. That definitely includes the pure dps classes. If someone isn't getting into dungeons or raids, we'll make some adjustments. If someone isn't viable in Arenas, we'll make adjustments.

3) We've taken our first steps in the buff consolidation plan. More will be coming as we see the plan in action.

4) The fact that we haven't always made such adjustments in a timely manner is brought up a lot, which is totally fair. But I hope our recent actions suggest that we want to be more proactive on this moving forward.
