Install Help ERROR #121 Version Mismatch

Blizzard Post
So I received the invitation to try WoW again with the Burning Crusade upgrade for 10 days free on my old account. I figured why not, I'll give it a try again. So I D/L the WoW install program and I install it. I log in and it says I can't play without the Burning Crusade expansion pack. So I then D/L the Burning Crusade expansion pack and install it. I then go and try to start WoW again and I get a "WowError". I've uninstalled it a couple times and re-installed it all with the same effect.

If anyone could help me figure this out I would greatly appreciate it. I tried only installing the Burning Crusade expansion just to try it and of course it said I couldn't install it until I installed the actual game. That is all. :)

Hello Bonedancer,

This type of version mismatch can occur if files were not updated properly or if any files indicate a different version of the game than you are on. This can occur if there were lingering files from when you last installed, or something that can just occur when writing so many files.

Steps to try to resolve this issue can be found here:
http://us.blizzard.com/support/article/21024

If absolutely necessary, you may need to reinstall again, but make sure that you fully remove any remaining game files after uninstalling and prior to reinstalling.

You can manually delete the game folders. If you go to c:\program files, you should be able to right click on the wow folder and delete it.

If you have anything in there like screen shots you wish to back up, you should do that first.

You may also want to search your hard drive for any Warcraft related files and delete them, including your Temporary folders and the Blizzard Entertainment folder from the common files folder. These folders will normally be located at:
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\-YourName-\Local Settings\Temp
(Delete all files in these folders that you are able to. Some files may be used by other programs and not able to be deleted.)

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Blizzard Entertainment
(Select and Delete this folder)

Rather than installing BC, please install just plain WoW and patch the game to current. The 3.0.2 patch should include the BC data, so if your account requires it already it should be there. This should avoid the process of installing BC, which will hopefully indicate to us if that process specifically is causing the issue, or if it's something else.
