A Statue to Himself

First of all, allow me to congratulate Blizzard for an excellent job with the Shattering of Azeroth.

Just one quibble. We all know King Varian Wrynn is a bit, shall we say, emo (he is a Fury Warrior after all, they can get quite emotional at times) but this time he's gone too far. Of all the heroes who have made a difference for the Kingdom of Stormwind he chooses...himself?!? And not, for example, his father, King Llane? Or Bolvar Fordragon? Or even General Marcus - who was defending the city day in, day out, rain or shine - when Varian was enjoying himself in the arena?

And what, exactly, has King Wrynn done to deserve a statue? Be born? It reminds me of what certain communist dictators like Romania's Ceauşescu and North Korea's Kim Il-sung did: spend Russian money on giant, 200 foot tall statues of themselves.

I am, of course, a loyal knight of Stormwind, and Varian, despite his emo-ness, is still my King. Just don't ask me to like him or sympathize with him. In fact, were I to hear of a plot to assassinate him (or if he got himself into a fight with Garrosh, who would probably pwn him) I don't think I'd even intervene. Prince Anduin, despite his young age, would make a much better King.

But perhaps this is your plan Blizzard, that Varian, as in classic Greek tragedy, is being set up for a fall...

OH SNAP! No one talks to my boy like that.

Lay some fists of fury down on this fool VeeDub!

(That's what I call him. We're real close friends.)

I'll be honest, I don't know about Varian. Most of my characters are ally so don't get me wrong, but he seems like he's working with half a deck ... OF THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT TCG AVAILABLE NOW FROM YOUR LOCAL RETAILER OF FINE TRADING CARD GAMES.

Kidding (sort of because I do enjoy the card game...), but seriously, that guy has a weirdness going on. Not that Garrosh doesn't too. Thinking about it, both of them are pretty interesting, which is awesome. How long did we have some dude on a throne and some kid on a throne? Doing nothing? I'm thoroughly enjoying the story being taken to new heights.

Although I've already used the retail-push joke, if you haven't read The Shattering I do actually recommend it. Not a huge fan of video game fiction personally, but it was a fun read. I'd hazard to say that (if you're interested in lore) you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't.
