Blizzards tampering the with healers mana bar and making it more “resource selecting” central. “As a blanket statement, healer mana wasn’t a big concern in Wrath of the Lich King. You could run out of mana sometimes, but it really didn’t affect your spell choice in the way it did prior to Lich King. We think resources should be important, though.” In my opinion this isn’t the way you make content in the game more challenging. You don’t change the way you play your character in the game, but you make the content itself harder and harder. For example ICC is harder than TOC. You didn’t have to change the way we play the game in terms of our characters to make the content itself more challenging.
In response to, “For starters, those expensive, fast heals were never a difficult choice. Expensive doesn’t really apply in the absence of a cost, so they were just fast heals. Why wouldn’t you want to cast a fast heal? Healer gameplay became smaller because they had fewer options.” If you actually read the whole article they say that they want healing to be more challenging other than just casting Flash of light the entire instance and not running out of mana. For healers who just hit level 80, they ran out of mana from healing not because of the new overhaul of character but because their gear was not up to par. But as you run through the instances and get better gear, you notice that your mana bar doesn’t drop as fast when you cast spells. This is obviously because you have better gear that gives your more intellect and a bigger mana pool.
For another point, “Second, since healers weren’t really running out of mana, we had to find other ways to make those raid encounters that were designed to be challenging actually challenging.” First of all the healers were running out of mana. Im talking generally, healers were running out of mana. Im not talking about the best guild in the world whos gear is outstandingly awesome. Im talking in general: the normal guild that raids ICC regularly. You can make the content challenging as I said before not by changing the way I play my character, but by making the content itself more challenging. For example if you feel like certain fights should last longer, add more like 100k health to the boss and make him do more damage. Trust me the fight will last longer with that addition, it will.
To wrap up my seemingly endless rant, I think blizzards overhaul with the way we change our characters is missing the point of why we play MMORPG’s. I think I can speak for most people when I say that we play MMORPG’s to enhance and better our character through getting tier gear and learning the rotations in raids, and to feel the accomplishment of getting better gear through challenging content. Why tell us to get tier 10 or tier 11 gear when your going to dramatically reduce our effectiveness in battle? Its almost like blizzard is making too many changes to the game that is starting to make playing the game trivial and not so refreshing to play.
