The fate of Bolfang the death knight

I've been thinking about this for a while.

As we all know both Bolvar Fordragon and Saurfang the younger met a tragic demise at the battle of the wrath gate. Saurfang was knocked out by the lich king at which point Arthas drew his soul from his corpse with his runblade Frostmourne. Bolvar in turn died in the attack by the Forsaken apothecaries. In the aftermath you approach Alexstrasa and her consort, both of them speaking draconic to each other at the time.

Anyway, in conjunction with the opening of AQ it was possible to learn Draconic and I remember reading a topic where someone translated what Alexstrasa actually said. I remember it being something along the lines of “No my beloved, they mustn’t yet know the fate of the young paladin”, likely referring to bolvar.

Now what is this fate she is speaking of? Thinking about this I got an Idea. For all we know Bolvar was consumed in the flames of the red dragons attacking but imagine if this isn’t the case. What if in fact surviving scourge carried of his corpse into icecrown? Then the Lich King would have the soul of a fallen orc warrior and the corpse of a dead knight of Stormwind. See where I’m going with this?

For those of you don’t, here’s some history. The first death knights where created by the orcish horde during their first war against Stormwind. These death knights were created by incarnating the soul of a dead orc warlock into the body of a fallen knight of Stormwind. Teron Gorefiend is an example of these death knights. It should also be noted that the part of the lich king that isn’t Arthas is in fact the twisted spirit of Ner’Zhul, an orc leader from this particular time.

So what if the lich king, at this time presumably scheming in Icecrown Citadel, is right now busy reanimating the first traditional death knight for decades, using the soul of Saurfang and the body of Bolvar? Considering his heritage I don’t consider this all too unlikely.

But why would Blizzard want to do this? Well first off it would make a more than awesome raid boss but even more likely it could prove to be solution to the escalating conflict between the alliance and horde in WotLK. The major reasons for this escalation is as we all know Varian Wrynn and Hellscream. Wrynn with his hatred for the horde due to his time spent as a gladiator and his anger at the horde for the murder of Bolvar, and Hellscream with his arguably unfounded hatred for the alliance. Both these characters seem to hold a strong grudge against each other and more than willing to go to war.

In the scenario I’m suggesting I reckon we, the players, will somehow redeem the Bolvar/Saurfang deathknight freeing him/them from the lich kings grasp. What with the forsaken and and the ebon blade proving it’s possible it doesn’t seem too unlikely. The result would be both Saurfang and Bolvar coexcisting in their new body. Bolvar has proven to be a very wise man and if Saurfang has any of his fathers traits I think the two of them could get along quite well.

What I’m thinking is that if Wrynn sees his friend Bolvar stand up and defend the hordes actions, which he probably would due to his new “insight”, and if Hellscream sees his childhood friend Saurfang speak through the mouth of a human, defending their cause, the two leaders might not be quite as inclined to murder each other.

So in the end this could be both awesome and prove to be the solution to the escalating and seemingly unsolvable conflict we are seeing between the horde and the alliance.

What do you think?

EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify what I meant about ending the escalating conflict. I don't believe that this would in any way "end" the hostilities between both factions but rather revert them to the point where they were prior to WotLK. Ever since Wrynn and Hellscream showed up we've been getting closer to situation where the factions would go to war which undoubtably would be cool, but arguably impossible to properly picture in an MMORPG. Through WoW we have always been hostile to each other but we've never been in a "true" war and I think that if Blizzard wants to make more expansions, which naturally they do, it's in their best interest to keep it that way as trying to capture the atmosphere of such a war with the current gameengine wouldn't really meet the quality we expect from Blizzard. Get your hopes up for their next MMO! (or WC4....)
