Where did the interesting weapons go?

As the title says, what happened? Whenever I see a new weapon in this game these days I always know what to expect. No special ability, nothing to make it stand out from the crowd. Just the same generic +str +stam etc.
This wasn't always the case.

A few examples:
Bloodspiller - Chance on hit to bleed target
Burning war axe - Chance to hurl a fiery ball at target
Blight - Chance to disease target
Darkspear - Chance on hit to increase party members crit

This all changed with TBC. I suspect the reason was that Blizzard wanted to make it easier to balance PVP and PVE by just having to consider class skills and not weapon "skills" as well. I for one would like special abilities on weapons back. Just don't make them too fight altering. You CAN have subtle effects that would make you go "what was that" in PVP without it actually being the one thing that killed you.

Input anyone?
