Sick mob urged boy, 17, to jump

A BROKEN-HEARTED schoolboy leaped to his death from a multi-storey car park after callous onlookers shouted at him to JUMP.
Police negotiators had been trying to talk 17-year-old Shaun Dykes down from a ledge over the 60ft drop.

But when he heard the “disgusting taunts” from the crowd below, Shaun told cops: “It’s gone too far.”

Then he began counting down from ten before throwing himself off.

An inquest heard yesterday how people had been shouting “Get on with it” and “Come on — stop wasting time”.

Filmed

Others filmed the tragic scene on their mobile phones — and later put the footage on internet sites YouTube and Facebook.

Chief Supt Andrew Hough told the Coroner: “The city lost its humanity for a period of time that day.”

Shaun, who was gay, had been depressed since splitting with his boyfriend five days earlier.

Police spent 45 minutes talking to him and were on the verge of persuading him to come down.

Det Insp Barry Thacker, a trained negotiator, said: “Shaun was engaging with us.

“I had been sat with my arms out towards him. He bent down to reach down to my hand when there was a shout of ‘You’re wasting taxpayers’ money’. He stood up, said ‘It’s gone too far’ and started counting down.

“Then he said ‘No’, closed his eyes and threw himself off.”

Shaun, from Kilburn, Derbyshire, earlier sent his mother a text saying: “I can’t cope with myself, I don’t know how to cope with anyone else.”

Then he went to the roof of the car park in the centre of Derby and climbed over a 5ft metal fence on to the ledge above a shopping street.

Clinical specialist Catherine Brooks, who cared for Shaun after an earlier overdose, described him as a “lovely, capable straight A-student with a bright future”.

She said she was “beyond disgusted” that onlookers encouraged him to leap to his death.

Verdict: Suicide.

It reminds me of the way people act on these forums when people tell otheres to go kill themselves - go die - etc etc.

The Internet is making the world become a hateful place and people take the aggression and from thier posting from internet forums, internet gaming etc into the real world.

I am not saying this is the only reason as there are other factors as well....but I have never seen so much hate as I do from some people on this and other forums...

Its a sad day....
